Lightening Strikes Twice

I saw it happen again last night. With no time left on the clock, a potentially game-changing field goal attempt bounced off the left upright. The first time I saw this happen in Rice-Eccles Stadium, it resulted in Utah losing to BYU and prompted one diehard Utah fan to shake his head slowly and wonder, “Maybe it really is the Lord’s university.”

Last night the tables were turned, and it was BYU’s Riley Stevenson who saw his field goal attempt ricochet off the left upright. BYU lost by three points.

But maybe it really is the Lord’s university. As the Utah fans poured onto the field before the ball had reached the ground, I looked at my watch. It 11:59 p.m. on Saturday night. If Riley Stevenson’s kick had been just a few more inches to the right, the game would have gone into overtime, and BYU would have found itself playing on the Sabbath.

So it’s just as well. And for lightening to strike twice in the same stadium suggests that maybe there is divine intervention even in the profane world of NCAA sports.
